E S S E Q U A M V I D E R I

About ten years ago I had this phrase scrawled in every notebook I owned. I would write it on my hand, doodle it on napkins in restaurants, think about it whilst sitting in traffic. I came across it again recently and it has stoked something within just as it did all those years ago. ‘Esse quam videri’ means “to be rather than to appear to be”. + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + One might say that it is more difficult to live this out in a social media driven age, but I believe it has always been difficult and it always will be, because human nature loves to preen, to control, and human nature will be around as long as we are. Resisting the daily temptation to construct an appeasing exterior, giving yourself space and courage to confront the ugly within is a fight worth fighting, a wrestle worth wrestling, a grapple worth grappling, because true freedom is the fruit. + + + + + +. + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + I am not there yet, but I’m committed to the wrestle. + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + “The Pharisee within usurps my true self whenever I prefer appearances to reality, whenever I am afraid of God, whenever I surrender the control of my soul to rules rather than risk living in union with Jesus, when I choose to look good and not be good.” – Brennan Manning
